STAYING INFORMED. PLANNING AHEAD. SUPPORTING YOUR JOURNEY.
Welcome to the November edition of Planning With Purpose: Financial Guidance for Special Needs Families.
For families caring for a loved one with special needs, staying informed can make a meaningful difference in planning for the future. Changes in government programs, disability benefits, accessibility requirements, and available services can raise important questions and create new considerations for families.
This month, we're highlighting several developments that may affect the support available to individuals with disabilities and the families who care for them. From understanding changes to Medicaid services to exploring new approaches to disability benefits and airline accessibility, we hope these resources offer helpful information to guide your planning.
THIS MONTH'S RESOURCE ROUNDUP:
1️⃣ WHAT CAN YOU DO IF YOU RECEIVE A MEDICAID HCBC NOTICE
Federal oversight of Medicaid home and community based services (HCBS) is loosening, giving states more room to change services, although the underlying laws haven't changed.
Click HERE to learn what steps you can take if you receive a Medicaid HCBS notice and how to stay informed about changes that may affect your loved one's services.
2️⃣ PROPOSED SYSTEM COULD MODERNIZE CURRENT DISABILITY BENEFITS
Portable disability benefits would follow the individual rather than the state, allowing people to move, work, marry, or build modest savings without automatically losing critical support.
Click HERE to explore the proposed changes and learn how a more flexible disability benefits system could affect individuals and families planning for the future.
3️⃣ ARE NEW DISABILITY ACCOMODATION RULES FOR AIRLINES COMING?
Airline workers whose job duties include assisting passengers with wheelchairs or scooters had to complete hands-on training by June 17, 2026. The training covers safe transfers, aisle chairs, and proper handling of mobility devices, although some protections, including yearly refresher training and rules for damaged wheelchairs, are paused while the Department of Transportation review the rules.
